In April 2024, Zhang released his second solo single, ‘Psychic,’ in Korean, English, and Chinese, accompanied by a music video shot entirely in Dubai. The music video, produced by the ideation company Watch My i, was filmed over three days with pre-production spanning over a month. The Dubai Tourism Board, Visit Dubai, facilitated the shoot in December 2023, which showcases the city’s diverse landscapes, including the desert, The Lost Chambers Aquarium, The Green Planet, Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood, Burj Khalifa, and Atlantis, The Palm. Directed by Los Angeles-based Andrew Donoho, known for his work with Janelle Monáe, twenty-one pilots, will.i.am, Bella Poarch, and Paul McCartney, the video captures the song’s themes of predestined and magical connections.
“The song talks about how I can control everything but cannot control you. I thought a lot about the inspiration, which came from the fans. In Asian literature, the camel represents forever love, so I wanted to use the camel to symbolize the connection between me and my fans,” Zhang explains.
The music video quickly amazed over six million views within six weeks of its release on YouTube. This project also marks Zhang’s second visit to Dubai, the first being in 2015 for the filming of ‘Kung Fu Yoga’ starring Jackie Chan and Sonu Sood.
“Working alongside the universally talented Lay Zhang and the awesome team from L.A. was truly an honor” said Michael Essey, Head of Production of Watch My i. “I honestly believe Dubai could use more productions of that particular size and scope. So here we go!”
